The Legacy
In the late 1800s, Mardin—an ancient city in what is now southeastern Turkey but historically linked with Greater Syria—was a flourishing hub for artisans, including skilled goldsmiths and jewelers. Around 1880, Mardin’s jewelry trade thrived due to its strategic position along key trade routes and its diverse population of Syriacs, Armenians, Arabs, and Kurds, who contributed to a rich tradition of craftsmanship. Jewelers in the region were known for their intricate handwork, use of high-karat gold, and designs that blended Ottoman, Arabesque, and local cultural influences. These pieces often served as heirlooms and were central to family traditions, celebrations, and dowries. Rooted in over a century of tradition, the family’s jewelry legacy began in 1884.
Stone’s great-grandfather opened a fine jewelry store there, contributing to a rich tradition of craftsmanship that blended Ottoman, Arabesque, and local influences. His dedication to detail and artistry laid the foundation for a generational legacy that continues today through Tohmé Jewelry’s commitment to creating meaningful, ethically made jewelry. Our work honors the past while shaping the future, blending old-world heritage with modern design.
